Are you a social media professional that's curious about the future of the internet?
I'm sure you're hearing words like Web3, Metaverse, and Crypto, and wondering what this means for you.
Is there a place for me? What do I need to know and learn?
If you're asking yourself these questions, then you and I are in the same place… So, I spoke with EIGHT experts in the Metaverse to learn what social media professionals need to know about this new frontier.
Why Did I Speak to 8 Metaverse Experts?
You might be wondering, ‘KBJ, why did you speak to so many people in Web3 and the Metaverse?'
To be candid, I was interviewing for a client in this space, and I did not land the client.
If you've been a part of our community for a while, you know that I am an expert in content marketing, social media, and all things digital strategy related.
Earlier this year, I was referred to a new project by a contact I've known for a long time.
It turned out to be an NFT project.
They were looking to hire a social media director to handle strategy and operations, which I felt more than uniquely qualified for, as I have been working as both a director of marketing and a director of operations.
Well, oddly enough, I did not get that role.
One of the last questions they asked me was, how many NFTs I owned, and had I worked on any other Web3, NFT, or Metaverse projects? And while I had worked on a thought leadership program for a Bitcoin expert, I had not actually worked on any projects in this space, and therefore I did not get the job.
That experience left me extremely curious about what I needed to know, what I was missing, and what I needed to learn in order to land clients in Web3 and the Metaverse.
So, I set out on a mission to start interviewing the smartest people I know in Web3, Crypto, NFTs, and the Metaverse.
And here we are a couple of months later, coming up on our first-ever Metaverse Social Summit this Thursday, October 20th!
Our Lineup of Metaverse Speakers
I spoke with eight amazing Metaverse experts over the course of these past few months.
Some were friends and people I knew who were already working in Web3, some were introductions from my contacts, and some were people I didn't know at all.
The first person I spoke to is Joel Comm who has been a dear friend of mine for the last decade. He wrote the first book on Twitter, and he's always been a super early adopter. So, it's no surprise he was also an early adopter of Web3! Joel sets the stage for us, talking about the differences between Web1, Web2, and Web3, so that you can understand where we've been and how it impacts where we are going.
Next, I spoke to Justin Rezvani who is the CEO of Zion, a decentralized application that's actually closer to Web5. We're going way into the future with his session! Justin's speaking to us about all things community, community building, decentralized platforms, and what decentralized social media looks like.
My friend Sebastian Rusk has a podcast called Web3 SUCKS! (if you don't understand it), so I reached out to him to join the summit. On his podcast, Sebastian is on a personal journey to learn everything he can about the Metaverse, Web3, and NFTs. I thought it would be great to learn from another “newbie” who is on the same journey as I am.
I had an excellent conversation with ERock Christopher, a contact of mine who I've had the pleasure of working with on several occasions. One of the things he spoke about was how to win clients in the Metaverse, which is so important for us as social media and marketing professionals. If you're concerned about this, he covers everything, including how to land these projects, how your expertise can carry into the future, and what these types of clients are looking for.
Continuing on my conversation with ERock about winning clients in this space, I spoke to my former co-founder of Social Media Pro, Jesse Jameson. He's had a podcast called Metaverse Nomads for over a year now, investigating and learning everything he can about this new iteration of the web, including how to vet projects and what to look for in a good project. One big question I had for him was how to get paid. In this cryptocurrency and NFT world, oftentimes people want to do trades or pay-for-performance. We discussed the dos and don'ts for vetting projects and how to get paid once you've landed a Metaverse client.
Next, I reached out to Lisa Buyer. Lisa and I have been connected digitally for several years, but we'd never really had the chance to connect one-on-one. I saw that she has an awesome project called the Female Disruptors Summit coming up in January, where she is interviewing and learning from powerhouse female entrepreneurs, many of whom are working in Web3. I had a chance to speak with her about roles for women in Web3 and how women are dominating in this space, our shared passion for digital wellness, and PR and marketing tips for the Metaverse.
Then, I had a wonderful conversation with Heather Parady. She has a beautiful outlook on community, what community building is about, and why community building is such a shift from audience building (which is what we've mostly been doing in Web2). Heather spoke with me about why being part of a community, instead of being spoken to as an audience member, will be so important in Web3 and what you need to do in order to begin cultivating that community now.
Lastly, we have a SURPRISE guest speaker that I don't want you to miss! We will be joined by the Community Director of Star Atlas, an epic Metaverse game, to learn everything we need to know about building and managing a very large community. The Star Atlas Discord has over 200,000 active users in it and 30 moderators, including 8 paid moderators. It's a huge amount of users to manage, and I'll be asking our special guest speaker everything about how to manage a community of that size, what it takes to cultivate a large community, and what's really needed behind the scenes.
