3 Key Takeaways from the Metaverse Social Summit

Reading Time: 4 minutes

I spent months interviewing eight of the top experts in the Metaverse, Web3, and Cryptocurrency, and I have three key takeaways that you need to know as a social media pro.

Over the past couple of months, I interviewed eight experts in all things community, Web3, Metaverse, Crypto, and digital marketing.

As I mentioned on the blog last week, I went on this journey to learn from these experts because I was referred to a client in this space that I did not land.

I didn’t land the project because I didn’t have any experience in this space.

And that made me worried. Worried that I might not have business or clients in the future, worried that there might not be a place for me in this new landscape…

So, I set out to discover what I was missing. Along the way, I learned three key lessons (and landed three new clients!) in this space.

Here are my 3 key takeaways from the Metaverse Social Summit.

3 Key Things I Learned About the Metaverse at Metaverse Social Summit

#1 – You Are Not Too Late

Many of us are already online and in the conversation. We’re hearing words like NFTS, Crypto, Bitcoin, Web3, and we think that we’re too late.

We know that there are people who are already working in these spaces. And because we’re not there yet, we think we’re too late.

“Everybody who’s going to be an expert in this space is already working in this space. They already have some background or experience that I don’t have, and therefore I’m going to be out of a job.”

The number one thing I learned from interviewing these experts on the Metaverse Social Summit is that is not true. You are not too late!

Let’s Time Travel to the 2008-2009 Twitter Era

This really reminds me of the 2008-2009 Twitter era. When I got my start working online, Twitter was all the rage. Web2 was buzzing, and it was truly the Wild, Wild West for social media.

If you ever wished that you got started on Twitter in 2008 as I did, then now is your chance. Because we have once again found ourselves in the Wild, Wild West. As Heather Parady, one of the speakers at the summit said, “WWW might as well stand for Wild Wild West.”

Many experts are talking about the future of the internet and the Metaverse as if it’s already defined and the truth is, it isn’t. This is just the beginning and we don’t know what the future will look like.

If you had told me about TikTok in 2008, I would have no idea what TikTok is or what that means. In my mind, there was no vision of TikTok. The same is true for Web3 now.

This is going to be an evolving and ever-changing space. The takeaway here is, if you’re reading this or if you registered for the Metaverse Social Summit, then you’re in the right place at the right time.

Now is the time to jump in. You are here, and that’s all that matters.

#2 – Web2 Skills Translate into Web3

Another major takeaway from the Metaverse Social Summit is that the skills we currently have and use day-to-day as social media professionals translate to Web3.

As a matter of fact, in one of the new projects that I’m now working on, I realized that people who have only worked in Web3 sometimes don’t have Web2 skills and are missing some of the fundamentals of online marketing.

Social media, digital strategy, and online marketing provide the foundation of what we’re going to be doing in Web3.

The truth of the matter is, we’ve only changed the tools and the technology. Human psychology and the fundamentals of how we are going to market to people haven’t changed.

The Most Important Thing To Do is Get Started

It’s not as complicated as it seems, and this is good news for all of us.

I was worried that I wouldn’t have the skills needed in Web3. Now that I’m working in this space with clients, I’m excited about the opportunity because so much of what I already know translates to this new arena.

The most important thing to do is just get started.

Once again, if you’re here and you’re reading this, you are in the right place.

If you want to take the next step and learn from experts who are already in the Metaverse, replay passes to the Metaverse Social Summit are available. Learn from these experts, and listen to what their Metaverse takeaways are.

#3 – Community is the Future

The third key takeaway I learned from the Metaverse Social Summit is that community will be the most important thing in this new iteration of the internet.

Community is all about taking ownership in Web3.

Currently, when we’re doing audience building on an Instagram or TikTok account, it’s a “one to many” approach. It’s a broadcast-out message. And while people can comment back and engage with us, it’s not the same as the type of community that is taking shape in Web3.

Think of community-building platforms like Discord that are becoming more prevalent as we move to Web3.

Community is all about the ability to be a participant and to help create the world that we’re building in the future. It will enable both brands and consumers to have ownership of the communities that they build and the content that they create.

Community is the future, and community-building will be one of the most sought-after skills in the Metaverse and Web3.
