Web3 and Social Media: What Social Media Pros Need To Know

Reading Time: 3 minutes

As social media managers, we’re used to ever-changing trends, algorithms and platforms, but what about Web3?

With Web3 in its early stages, you may be wondering what this means for you as a social media professional and how to navigate the new landscape.

For our upcoming Metaverse Social Summit, we spoke with Joel Comm about everything social media professionals need to know about Web3.

What Social Media Pros Need To Know About Web3 with Joel Comm

The Differences Between Web 1, Web 2, and Web 3

There are key distinctions between Web1, Web2 and now, Web3.

  • Web 1 – the “Read-Only Web”. Sites would publish content and we would interact with it by reading it. Simple as that.
  • Web 2 – the “Participative Social Web”. In our current version of the web, now we read the content and we write the content. We’re active participants in the content economy, and this is where we have been for many years with social media.
  • Web 3 – the “Decentralized Web”. Web3 is a huge paradigm shift because now we own it. We’re able to read the content, we’re able to write the content, and now we’re able to own our own content. This goes a long way towards being able to monetize ourselves, our content, and our value as content creators and social media professionals.

Web3 is A Huge Paradigm Shift

This new iteration of the web is centered around decentralization, blockchain technologies, and token-based economics.

It’s not going to be a simple little transition. Web3 is a huge paradigm shift that takes the power away from big tech and puts it in the hands of creators, individuals, and communities. In Web3, you will own your own content and your community.

We’ve just begun to tap into what decentralized social media looks like,, and what we’re going to do with it as the years go on is really up to the creativity and imagination of its content creators.

Be An Early Adopter of Web3 and Social Media in Web3

We are still in the early stages of Web3.

We have examples and use cases that demonstrate the power of this new iteration of the web, but we’re still very much in a pioneering space, especially when it comes to the Metaverse.

As social media and digital marketing professionals, it’s our job to stay ahead of the curve, ahead of trends, and learn new platforms in their early phases.

There’s a lot of people that came to the Web2 social media party after it had really taken off, and they were in the mass adoption cycle or even the late adoption cycle.

We all know clients or friends who got involved in Web2 during these later cycles and thought, ‘Why didn’t I see this sooner? I could have built my business faster, I could have engaged a larger audience, I could have had more reach.’

With Web3, we can see the opportunity that is coming. We are currently watching it be built.

This is an opportunity for those who are really paying attention and don’t want to miss the next big thing. This is your chance to become an early adopter of Web3, and learn the ins and outs of this new era of the web while it’s still developing.

If you take the time to learn how it all works, you can lead others into the Web3 world with your professional expertise.
