  • Deciding to go full-time in social media management, and working with clients?

In this article, you will learn where social media jobs are posted online and how you too can find that social media management job of your dreams!

Finding a Social Media Management Job

1) Full-Time or Side-Gig

Are you looking to be a full-time social media manager, or will this be a side-gig while you are running another business, or while being employed full-time? It is important to plan for and search for a job related to the time you have available.

Going about finding a full-time social media management job is going to be a bit different than looking for a new client-on-the-side or new clients as a full-time business.

2) Employee or Contractor

Once you’ve decided you know what time commitment you are willing and able to make, you need to decide on looking for employment vs contractors projects.

As a full-time employee, you have a right to benefits. As an idependent contractor, you have the right to fill in your time as you please, as long as the contract requirements are fulfilled and the project gets done.

Both have pros and cons. The best advice we can give you here is to know the difference as to be prepared!

3) In-Office, Local or Remote

If you are a local employee, you most likely are expected to come into the office on a regular basis as in daily, or if you are allowed to work from home, you will still be expected to come into the office for special occasions, networking events, client meetings, staff meetings and possibly training.

As a local contractor, you might run into some of the same issues; clients who want to have a face-to-face meeting with you weekly or monthly. Plan and bill accordingly if that’s the case.

If you work remotely, whether as an employee or contractor, you will have to make an extra effort to stay on top of communication. Attending weekly (virtual) meetings are a must, as well as using group task management tools like Basecamp, Slack or Asana.

Working remotely has its advantages as well as drawbacks. Know both as you plan and prep for the next steps in your career.

4) Skills and Experience

As you start to look for new opportunities in social media management, understand what skills are desired by employees and/or clients. You might find you have most, but not all, desired skills.

No worries. Almost anything you need to know about social media management can be learned online.

However, remember that eventhough new skills can be learned by taking online classes, real hands-on experience is only gained from doing and executing these new skills.

Therefore we recommend that if you’ve recently learned a new skill, such as Facebook Ad management, Hubspot management, or social media strategic planning, you use these new skills on your own social media accounts to put things in practice.
